Leetspeak : a parent's primer to computer slang

In BGST we conduct courses on Speech Communication. I doubt we will ever conduct a course on Leetspeak. Microsoft has an article on this new language that kids use on-line with their keyboard. It is found at http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/children/leetspeak.mspx.

Definition from the site : "Leetspeak, or leet for short, is a specific type of computer slang in which a user replaces regular letters with other keyboard characters to form words phonetically. Though it was originally used by computer hackers and online gamers ("leet" is a vernacular form of "elite"), leet has moved into the Internet mainstream. Your kids might use it online for fun, and you might even have seen a word or two used by your own friends and associates online."

One day you may need this site to understand someone or your own children's language on-line. For me, I just hope I will never need to use it.

Any comments?

Free Christian E-books

On discovering the usefulness of this blog, my hardworking colleague has
forwarded this link to me :

View Free Christian Books Online at
http://www.prayerforallpeople.com/free.shtml. John Piper's books are also
available.

I don't fancy reading a book from the screen but you might! What I might do
from time to time is to use a speech software to read sections of the book
to me. To me one of the attraction of this site is that its effort does
narrow the gap of knowledge between the poor and the rich.

Enjoy!

Free Denver Seminary Magazine

Good News! You can now download the print version of the Summer 2006 Denver Seminary Magazine, Vol 2, Number 2, Summer 2006

3 areas for your prayers

1. Liver Transplant - One of our lecturers is going for a liver transplant in August. He will be away for a couple of months. Please pray for the Almighty God to go before them to open doors for them, to be beside them to comfort them and to be behind them to supply for their emotional and financial needs.

2. General Fund - The daily running of the school has increased quite a lot since we purchased our own building at 29 - 31 Tanjong Pagar Road. Utilities, property tax and maintenance needs are some of the new expenses that we have to deal with. Please pray that the good Lord will move like-minded brothers and sisters-in-Christ to contribute to the lay training ministry at BGST.

3. Building Fund - Last but not least is our building fund. We are grateful for many who has contributed to this fund. The initial plans to repay the bridging loan did not work out. The interest on the loan will increase. Other fund raising plans are in the plans. Please pray for brother and sisters-in-Christ to be aware of BGST and her needs. Please pray for cheerful and generous giving. Please pray for God's wisdom for the chairman, Dr. Toh as he leads his team of excellent volunteers and donors to steer the school from this matter.

For more details, please drop a comment or email me at lib@bgst.edu.sg. God blessed.

Web OPAC Add-Ons!

I am so happy.
VTEC, our web OPAC service provider were just wonderful last week.
They fixed the New Titles List subject truncation bug at http://asp.vtecsys.com.sg/bgst/newtitles/bull1.htm and created a Electronic Journals Type for us. This enable us to upload a file to an issue in the e-journals type. Users will not need to fret with slow or broken links but can view such files once they are uploaded to the database. Thus E-journals could be archived. Of course, we still need to seek permission from E-journals publisher. The immediate use is the New Titles List info. The BGST This Week is another possibility.
Finally, a new field is created to enable us to input course code for our course reserve titles. This will enable us to track titles to course code.
Thanks again to the VTEC team and Praise be to God Almighty.

Jonah's Irony

My church is studying the book of Jonah. Many years ago I made this observation : Jonah knew the intention of God very well. He knew that if he obeyed God, Nineveh will be spared. Thus he ran away. The irony is that he forgot that God is Almighty and he cannot hide from him.
I like this para from my church bulletin on 23 July 2006 : "The wicked sees obedience as a set of burdens but the righteous sees obedience as for man's good. The rules and commands come from the One whose attributes are admirable and lovely to behold and should be our source of delight. Obedience should follow naturally. It should be quick, swift and complete."

Finishing Well

Just for your info, Rev. Dr. David W. F. Wong has just published another book entitled : "Finishing well : closing life's significant chapters". I quickly grab one for my dear wife. Of course I will want to read it too.
This book examines 13 biblical characters, deriving both positive and negative observations from incidents in their lives. I hope it will jump start my devotion with God. Oh! The retail cost is $16.00. To ensure that you have a copy, drop me and email at lib@bgst.edu.sg. I can get more stock from him.
Have a blessed Sunday.

More info on my course on blogging

The workshop facts are slowly sinking in. The benefit blogging is instant news without waiting for other parties to assist you to publish the news. As a result of the workshop, this blog account was created.
Ivan did not give us much theory and definition about blogs. He said there are lots of info out there.
True enough here are just some links I found helpful :
BLOG - http://computer.howstuffworks.com/blog.htm
PODCASTING - http://computer.howstuffworks.com/podcasting.htm
RSS FEED - http://computer/howstuffworks.com/rss-feeds.htm
Incidentally http://computer.howstuffworks.com is a good site to subscribe to.
Do you agree?

Testing

I just lost one post. I am testing this one to see if I could post via email.
Thanks to LAS, I really enjoyed the course on blogs by Ivan Chew. He helped us to set up blog accounts such as this one and explain briefly to us what RSS-feed is. Then he showed us podcasting and other skills such as adding images.

Library Survey

Last week BGST library send out a survey form to all members, alumni and students. We hope you can quickly use the pre-paid envelope to return the survey form upon completion. Thank you.
